“It would have been Fallout…”: If Not For Baldur’s Gate 3, Swen Vincke Admits 2 Other IPs Were of Interest to Larian

Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the most popular gaming titles in the world. This game from Larian Studios was released in 2023 on Windows, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and macOS. Despite some seriously great games in that year with the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Diablo 4, Starfield, and many more, this RPG title came out to be the Game of the Year.

However, there was a time when it was almost impossible that Larian Studios would have achieved this accolade. And at that time, we would have seen a Fallout title from this highly acclaimed developing studio.

Larian Studios Was About to Make a Fallout Game If It Wasn’t Baldur’s Gate 3

Recently, Larian Studios Head Swen Vincke told Edge (via GamesRadar) that Wizards of the Coast Property was one of the few RPG names that the company had on its cards. Vincke stated that the development company needed to make its mark to a huge extent.

That’s why the company thought of developing one of Bethesda’s franchises, Fallout. However, later, things went in another direction, and the company ended up winning a ground-breaking title in 2023. In Vincke’s words:

It would have been Ultima; it would have been Fallout; it would have been Baldur’s Gate. There was not a lot to choose from.

After the shutdown of the original developers, Black Isle Studios, the license for Baldur’s Gate remained untouched. And that was when the company thought about hitting a home run. Vincke said:

It’s one of those IPs that you know a lot of people will want to work on. So it would be great for attracting other people to the studio.

The studio head later explained his decision. He thought that unless and until the studio steps up in the field of AAA production, there won’t be any chances of breaking the glass ceiling.

What’s Next for Larian Studios?

In April, the Larian CEO gave an interview to GamesIndustry.buz, where he expressed his company’s future endeavors. He confirmed that there will be no sequel to BG3 or any DLC for it.

According to him, his company doesn’t believe in making 40 or 50 games at a time, which would eventually kill the studio. This is what he said:

I like that the games we’re making have an end because then I can move on to the next one. We’re not making another BG or DLC because we’re done. We want to move on to something new.

So, what’s next? When asked about the next projects for the company, Vincke chose to remain tight-lipped. But his intriguing answer to that question stated a lot without revealing something solid:

We have ambitions to make really good RPGs, and that’s sufficient.

There are many rumors surfacing around the fact that there are already two RPGs on the card. One of these RPGs is going to be codenamed “Excalibur.” On the other hand, the community is speculating that the company might dig again into the treasure hunt of the Divinity series, like Divinity: Original Sin 3. Or, is it really going to be a Fallout title this time, an unfinished business?
