The Last of Us often stands as a name that is familiar to viewers and gamers worldwide. The popular third-person adventure series continues to stay relevant in conversations, despite Naughty Dog ceasing development for its online variant.
Recently, a fan reignited the conversation and reminded fans of what gamers have lost. This includes a throwback to Factions MP and ceasing the development of The Last of Us Online.
Popular streamer Lisan Al BG recently rekindled the conversation around The Last of Us multiplayer project. This came to light when the streamer re-shared a post showcasing his experience with The Last of Us’ Factions MP mode.
This is a mode in the first game where players get to experience a familiar world but through different characters and settings. The popularity of this mode urged players to demand something similar for The Last of Us Part 2.
However, Naughty Dog had different plans for this and conceptualised an entirely new spin-off game which was titled The Last of Us Online. This game would be set in the same universe, but explore the nuances of survival and combat against and with other players.
Idk why some of yall suddenly starting reposting this but Never Forget What They Took From Us! https://t.co/arSsSSWD1n

As Lisan Al BG has expressed, fans need to remember what they had always hoped for but didn’t receive. On that note, it’s fair to keep high expectations from what the studio brings us next, as the resources for development are now being used for something else.
It came as shocking news to everyone when Naughty Dog announced the decision to stop The Last of Us Online’s development. This was back in December 2023, and the studio has moved from the project completely. In its official blog post, the company explained its decision:
We have more than one ambitious, brand new single player game that we’re working on here at Naughty Dog, and we cannot wait to share more about what comes next when we’re ready.
Naughty Dog went on to say how focusing on The Last of Us Online would mean delving into the realm of crafting and maintaining a full-fledged live-service title.
Instead, the studio would rather use these resources to build more single-player titles. Something the studio is already skilled at.
While there’s no clear evidence that the next big title from the studio is indeed a The Last of Us game, this might be the time we could see something the team hasn’t tried its hands on before.
