Riot Games Briefly Looked to Expand Valorant and LoL Domination in Smash Melee Competitor, Before Axing It Completely

by NewsB

The diversification of the League of Legends universe began several years ago, with all kinds of projects in development. Thanks to this game, Riot Games gained incredible popularity and later released another successful title, Valorant

Despite the studio’s intention to diversify further by planning more games within this universe, new reports indicate that one of these titles will be cancelled. This particular game would have had a style similar to Nintendo’s Smash Bros. series. The report indicates that a sizable team was tasked with developing this game, but it has now been abandoned.

League of Legends’ total dominance in the MOBA genre has been unquestionable for numerous years, leading its development studio, Riot Games, to grow incredibly.

They have brought new projects to life or developed other types of games unrelated to this universe. Valorant is one of the most popular names. Nevertheless, the studio continues to seek new ways to diversify these IPs with new projects.

According to a new report by Mikhail Klimentov, who worked at The Washington Post, the studio behind this popular title decided to cancel a game that was scheduled to be released soon.

This game was going to have a title in the style of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, but the studio ultimately decided to step back due to certain failures in other similar games recently. This is unfortunate, especially for fans of this universe filled with characters.

According to a source close to the team members dismantled by Riot Games, the creators of Valorant and League of Legends decided to cancel the project after seeing the dramatic failure of MultiVersus for Warner Bros. Games.

It appears that this type of game only works on certain platforms, such as Nintendo, thanks to solid games like Smash or Melee that bring together all of the brand’s characters.

According to Klimentov, the team behind this game consisted of more than 80 employees. The company reportedly offered a severance package to many of them and transferred others to different teams.

The studio probably made a good decision in canceling this project and stopping the investment. Despite the fact that the community closely follows these characters, there was a high possibility that it would have been a failure from the start.

Meanwhile, Riot Games’ other titles continue to be a resounding success for the studio, month after month. Recently, Valorant will also be part of Xbox Game Pass, increasing the number of players who can access it.

Users who play through this service will receive certain benefits regarding gaining experience and other features. The studio is still betting on these two titles growing even more in terms of community.
