The Boys Actor Discusses Octopus Sex Scene And Why He Was Worried About It

On the TV show The Boys, Chace Crawford plays a superhero named The Deep who is basically Aquaman, and as such, he can speak and connect with all manner of underwater creatures. The Deep gets especially close with one particular sea creature, an octopus named Ambrosius who is voiced by Tilda Swinton. The Deep and Ambrosius are in love, and they have sex on the show. Crawford has now discussed how he “almost had a panic attack” the day before the sex scene in an episode from Season 3.

“It’s so funny and brilliant now, but when that came up, I was like, ‘Oh god, how’s this going to work?'” Crawford told Rolling Stone (via AOL). “And then it got 24 hours out from the first day I had to shoot it and I almost had a panic attack.”

Crawford said he spoke with The Boys creator and showrunner Eric Kripke to tell him that he was “worried about the scene.” He chatted with Kripke about the mechanics of the shoot and how naked he would have to be during filming. In the end, Kripke changed one shot in response to Crawford’s concerns, and the actor said “it was great.” He did not elaborate, however, on the changes.

Crawford said the scene was handled delicately during filming, but it was still a little strange. “Just the act of picking up the octopus and getting a wet octopus in the bed was so funny and weird. And then it doesn’t come out for a year almost, and you’re like, ‘How is this going to be received?'”

But in the end, Crawford said “everyone loved it.”

The Boys Season 4 is now airing on Prime Video, with the penultimate episode premiering this Thursday, July 11. A fifth and final season will follow sometime later.

The Boys, which debuted in 2019, is set in a world dominated by the superhero corporation Vought. The series follows the conflict between the superpowered “supes” and The Boys, a group of (mostly) human civilians whose lives have been adversely affected by the supes. The cast includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti.
